The excitement was palpable when Leeds United made a move for Jean-Kevin Augustin last month, but his move to Elland Road hasn’t quite turned out as everyone expected.

Leeds have played nine games since Augustin’s arrival, and he’s made pretty much no impact since joining the club, appearing off the bench just three times and failing to find the net in any of those appearances.

Finding a striker in January is hard, but it’s by no means impossible, and getting things right at that point of the season can be absolutely vital to a team’s promotion hopes.

There may be no better example of this than Aleksandar Mitrovic’s impact at Fulham in the 2017/18 season.

Coincidentally, the Serbian’s impact that campaign perfectly highlights just how badly Victor Orta got things wrong in January.

Just look at how quickly the £22.5m-rated man settled in and started firing at Fulham, seven goals in his first nine games is all you need to know, and that was even after a bit of a bedding-in period.

The Fulham man only came off the bench in his first two outings and it took four matches for him to find the net.

Much like Marcelo Bielsa’s style, Slavisa Jokanovic’s system was one that certain players struggled to get to grips with.

Former Europa League regular Jozabed failed to make any impact at Fulham, playing just eight times for the club, and ex-Braga captain Rui Fonte also struggled under Jokanovic, scoring three times in 29 appearances for the London club.

However, Mitrovic shows that certain players can fit in immediately if they’re of the right mould, but unfortunately, it seems Orta didn’t find that player in the shape of Augustin.

The Frenchman quite simply wasn’t up to scratch when he arrived, he wasn’t fit enough, and with no pre-season to get into shape, the director of football should have seen the dangers of him flopping coming from a mile off.

If the Spaniard had got it right in the same way Fulham did a couple of years ago, United may have had an even more comfortable lead at the top of the table, but as it stands their January signings look rather foolish.

In other news, Leeds may have an ideal Ben White replacement in their sights.
