The Athletic’s Phil Hay has dropped some late team news ahead of Leeds United’s Premier League clash against Wolves.
Writing in his introduction for The Athletic’s coverage of tonight’s clash against Wolves, Hay revealed: “The team news tonight – Bamford should be in the squad again and Rodrigo (quad) was due to train yesterday so fingers crossed on him.
“Gelhardt has a minor back injury and while Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips are back in training and available, Marsch sounded like he’d be careful with them this evening. Jamie Shackleton and Lewis Bate are doubtful and Firpo will be missing for the next month or so.”
Subsequently answering a question from a fan about Rodrigo specifically, the journalist added: “Remains to be seen whether Rodrigo is fit to start but if he is, I’m sure he will. It’s one of Marsch’s jobs – to find some consistency in him. I’ve always felt that there’s a good player in Rodrigo. He’s just never been able to sustain form and it’s never been clear exactly where or how he’s supposed to fit.”
While Rodrigo has hardly set the world alight at Elland Road since his big-money move from Valencia, new Leeds boss Jesse Marsch was quick to praise his influence recently, citing him as part of the leadership group at Elland Road.
Indeed, here on FFC, we’ve suggested that the Spaniard could be one of the players to really explode under Marsch, and his goal against Norwich last week could be the catalyst for really seeing him shine in these final few weeks of the Premier League season.
News that the versatile forward may not make it for tonight’s clash against Wolves is worrying for someone who has not been able to find any real consistency in terms of his form or his game-time.
Just when you thought he might have picked up some real confidence with his strike against Norwich, he now becomes a big doubt for the next game – quite the snapshot of his entire Leeds career.
It’s news which will have Marsch sweating.
