Leeds: Victor Orta had a shocker on Junior Firpo

Leeds United have enjoyed a great deal of success in the transfer market over recent seasons, with the likes of Raphinha, Illan Meslier, Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford all being signed for relatively modest fees before going on to establish themselves as a crucial part of the Whites’ first team squad.

However, despite the vast majority of Victor Orta’s signings having impressed at Elland Road, there have also been a few transfers that have not worked out as initially hoped – with one such deal being the club’s £13m move for Junior Firpo.

While it may appear slightly harsh to judge a player after spending just 15 months at the club, considering just how poor the 26-year-old was for Leeds last season, coupled with his numerous injury setbacks, the argument that the Dominican Republic international’s signing already looks to have been a mistake is an easy one to make.

Indeed, over his 24 Premier League outings last term, the left-back offered little going forwards, scoring no goals, providing two assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 0.9 key passes, taking 0.4 shots and completing 0.3 crosses per game.

The £42k-per-week defender also failed to impress in metrics more typical of his position, helping the Whites keep just one clean sheet, in addition to being beaten by an opponent an average of 1.2 times, losing possession 9.2 times and committing 1.6 fouls per game.

These metrics saw the 26-year-old who Paul Robinson dubbed “inexcusable” average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.60, ranking him as Jesse Marsch’s seventh-worst performer in the top flight of English football last time out.

What month did Marcelo Bielsa's tenure come to an unfortunate end?

Furthermore, with Firpo having missed seven league fixtures due to injury last term, in addition to missing a further eight matches as a result of a knee injury in the current campaign, it is clear that the full-back is not exactly the most dependable option in the world.

As a result of the above, the former Barcelona talent currently possesses a market valuation of just £4.4m, a whopping 66% less than the Whites paid for his services a little over a year ago – proving that Orta well and truly had a shocker when bringing Firpo to Elland Road back in the summer of 2021.
