Phil Hay issues behind-scenes update at Leeds United

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered a very promising injury update from Leeds United…

What’s the latest?

The Yorkshire outfit suffered another heavy defeat on Saturday afternoon, this time at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, who won 4-0 at Elland Road, thus making it five straight games that Leeds have conceded three or more goals.

During this dire run of form, the side have been missing several key stars, including skipper Liam Cooper, defensive midfield powerhouse Kalvin Phillips and last season’s top goalscorer Patrick Bamford.

But according to the ever-reliable reporter, the latter two are due back in early March as their recovery has been going well.

“I don’t think they’ll be far off that date – they’re both doing well (as is Bamford I’m told),” he revealed during a Q&A on The Athletic with supporters for the Spurs game.

Will Leeds stay in the Premier League?

Huge boost

It’s believed that the Whites duo are in line to return to action for their Premier League clash with Aston Villa at Elland Road on March 10th and whilst Marcelo Bielsa isn’t likely to be in the dugout by then, whoever is will receive a timely and much-needed boost.

As revealed by LeedsLive journalist Joe Donnohue, Leeds have lost 17 of their last 23 league games without Phillips in the starting lineup and that’s an issue that is hard to ignore and it merely highlights the influence and reliability of the 26-year-old anchorman.

Since losing all three players to a hamstring problem during their draw with Brentford on December 5th, the Yorkshiremen have leaked a whopping 40 goals across 12 games, averaging 3.3 goals conceded per outing. 20 of those have come in their last five alone.

Leeds were beaten by Spurs in their first game of 2021 but what was the scoreline?

Without Phillips protecting the backline, there isn’t anyone else capable of stepping up and then when you throw in the absence of your club captain, it’s easy to see why they have struggled defensively.

Bamford has also been a big miss after his 17 league goals last season. Only one player has found the net more than four times (Raphinha on nine goals).

Therefore, whoever leads the team out against Villa is in line for a major and exciting boost, one that should give fans confidence that they can stave off relegation and remain a top-flight team for the foreseeable future.
