Leeds United star Rodrigo could explode under Jesse Marsch

As new Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch assesses his squad at Elland Road in his first few days at the club, there might be one player in particular who he will feel he can really get the best out of: Rodrigo.

The Spain international has endured a difficult time in Yorkshire since his big-money move from Barcelona, with form and fitness a real struggle for him.

Dubbed “extraordinary” by former Barcelona boss Quique Setien, Rodrigo’s time at Elland Road saw him being linked with a move back to his native Spain, although he was quick to dismiss that speculation.

Can you beat this impossible Leeds quiz!?

He managed just seven goals in the Premier League all season last year, and that was largely down to a real hot streak of form towards the end of the campaign – his start to the new season has been less than stellar as well, scoring just three times in his 22 games across all competitions.

However, the Spaniard remains someone with the speed of thought to really change a game for his side, and that’s something Marsch will be hoping he can unshackle.

His display against West Ham earlier in the campaign saw The Athletic’s Phil Hay rave about the versatile attacker and the role he was occupying.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “I thought Rodrigo’s false nine performance on Saturday was worth another look. Lots to admire and ponder in his positioning, movement, interplay and switches of position with Raphinha. More displays like that could spark Leeds United into life.”

Indeed, after an impressive performance against Arsenal last year, former Leeds striker Noel Whelan explained just how influential Rodrigo can be, telling Football Insider: “He’s always looking for it, he’s never ever standing still, he’s always on the move and that’s what I like about him. He can’t be marked, he’s always looking for a space – very much the next Hernandez.

“He is a player that looks like he can make things happen. He’s very intelligent, he brings other people into play and makes space for them.”

Given his pedigree on the European stage with Valencia, and the top-level experience he has built up over his career, Rodrigo could be the man to really explode under a new manager.

The £100k-a-week earning star could finally be rejuvenated at Elland Road under Marsch’s leadership.

Meanwhile, Marsch could become an instant crowd favourite by unleashing this Leeds academy talent…
