Former Leeds United frontman Noel Whelan has called on the club to make a splash for another ex-Elland Road figure later this summer.

What's he said?

The Whites look set to finally return to the top-flight of English football as a run of five straight victories has seen them retake control of the Championship table whilst also opening up a seven-point cushion to the playoff positions.

Premier League football hasn't been seen in west Yorkshire since 2004, so it would certainly be some achievement from Marcelo Bielsa and his squad.

And Whelan believes they can top everything off at the end of the season by clinching James Milner from Liverpool.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said:

“You want your home-grown back at your football club. I am not sure if he would leave Liverpool right now.

"He is one player that Liverpool would want to keep because of the professionalism he has. He stayed home and watched the FA Cup when the young lads were playing instead of going abroad – that is invaluable. For a club to have a professional like that, concentrate on the FA Cup even though he is not playing that is brilliant for the younger lads.

“He looks after his body and he still has the hunger to win. He has got a lot to offer.

“I would love him back at the club at some point. I am not sure whether it would be next season but he would help us, absolutely.”

PL-ready

If Leeds want to ensure they aren't one-season wonders, then trying to attract a player of Milner's calibre is the right way to go about their business - there can't be many players of his age that can still cut the mustard at an elite level.

The 34-year-old won the Champions League with Liverpool last season and is well on his way to clinching the Premier League title this term, that's the sort of quality Leeds would be getting.

Of course, there's no guarantee that the midfielder will want to leave the Reds anytime soon but if anything can be done to clinch him, then Bielsa and co should act quickly to do so.

As per Transfermarkt's recorded matches, Milner has featured well over 500 times in the top-flight while this season he's managed to play 33 matches where he has scored four goals and provided four assists.

The two-time PL winner could complete the perfect fairytale by ending his impressive career at Elland Road.
