Speaking in a Q&A on The Athletic (Wednesday, 4pm), the media outlet's Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay has revealed the "interesting" thing director of football Victor Orta has told him about his working relationship with manager Marcelo Bielsa.

What did he say?

Well, the Scottish journalist was asked by a Whites supporter about how the Spaniard and the Argentinean boss work together on a daily basis with the Yorkshire outfit, and he revealed what Orta had told him.

Hay said: "Although interesting, Orta told me that he only ever goes to the training ground once a fortnight. He makes a point of not being under Bielsa's feet."

A surprise?

It probably isn’t too much of a surprise that Orta doesn’t want to be seen as interfering with the former Athletic Bilbao boss’ work during the week.

However, it might be more of a surprise that he only visits the Thorp Arch training base once a fortnight, when he presumably has a face-to-face chat with the experienced manager.

You would assume that aside from that potential meeting, the rest of their contact either comes over email or by phone, which is certainly an interesting way of working in the modern game.

It also probably offers an insight into how hands-on Bielsa is in his role and the control he likes to have, without too many outside influences or distractions.

It appears to be a strategy that is paying off well as things stand with Leeds top of the Championship awaiting the resuming of the 2019/20 season, and they are likely to interact more when it comes to recruitment over the next transfer window – they might even be a Premier League club again by then.
