At the beginning of the summer, Leeds United were linked with a number of the Championship’s top players.
One man the Whites were reportedly keen on was Brentford’s Said Benrahma, but in the end, they decided against signing him.
This week it has been revealed that one thing that caused United to go cold on the potential signing was a video he posted on his social media account – one which has since been deleted.
Indeed, Phil Hay discussed the matter on the latest edition of his podcast saying:
“Benrahma was on the list right at the start [of the transfer window] but they seemed to go off him during the summer.
“It was mentioned to me by a couple of people that they hadn’t been overly thrilled with the video of Benrahma on social media of him playing volleyball in his swimming pool at this huge villa.
“I think the question arose of what his temperament was going to be like, how well he’d fit into the dressing room.”
Temperament, attitude and character are undoubtedly things a club has to consider before signing a footballer, but was Benrahma’s video really that bad?
The Algerian, rated at £25m by his club according to a report from The Times in August, has since deleted the video because of the backlash he got from it, and while it was a bit egotistical to post drone shots of his hair being cut at an expensive villa in the sun, it doesn’t affect how talented he is.
If Leeds were put off by his incredible wage demands, that would make more sense, but a social media video isn’t a valid reflection on the type of player or the type of man he is.
Benrahma is a 25-year-old footballer on thousands of pounds a week, and even the most talented footballers in the world are guilty of posting cringeworthy content on their social media. That doesn’t make them worse players.
Kalvin Phillips is one of the most important players at Leeds, and even he was posting pictures of him and his teammates on a private jet dressed in their designer clothes before they went on their post-season holiday. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

If this one video of Benrahma’s holiday has put Leeds off signing him they really need to rethink their transfer policy, as they’ve missed out on an extremely talented player who could have added a lot to their squad.
