Whilst Leeds haven’t brought in any new personnel since the summer, they keep finding themselves linked to some looming outgoings. Ezgjan Alioski is a man potentially facing the chopping block after reports have linked him to a move to Turkey to join Superlig giants Galatasaray.
Despite the fact he is still playing regular minutes under Marcelo Bielsa, the left-back may to be headed for the door. Alioski has less than six months left on his current £55,000 per week with the Whites and his departure will surely mean that Bielsa will need a new man in his defence.
If there were ever any doubts over his status with the club, his performance against Arsenal may have sealed his fate.
Leeds were handed a 4-2 defeat at the hands of a relentless Mikel Arteta side on Sunday. Even with goals from Pascal Struijk and Helder Costa, they couldn’t find their way back into the match at the Emirates. It was a disappointing performance as a team collective, but Alioski was particularly lacklustre in defence.
According to Sofascore, the North Macedonian failed to register a single block, clearance or interception and managed just one tackle against the Gunners. This is a vast difference from the two interceptions and five tackles he put in against Crystal Palace in their 2-0 win.
Alioski also managed just 43 touches and 23 accurate passes against Arsenal compared to his 86 touches and 55 passes against the Eagles.
In fact, this season, the full-back’s average match rating of 6.58 ranks him a lowly 13th in this Leeds squad, with only four players who have made more than ten appearances this campaign figuring lower than him.
And it seems others have caught onto his questionable defending, with former Leeds man Paul Robinson criticising his performance against the Gunners.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, he said: “I think Alioski was exposed again for his defensive frailties. Leeds’ need for a left-back is getting more and more apparent.
“There’s no word on his contract situation and getting subbed off like that and [Niall] Huggins coming on and doing excellently… it doesn’t bode well for him at the moment.”
With Leeds in desperate need for some new defensive options, the time has come for them to be ruthless and cast away the deadweight and start afresh with some personnel.
