Leeds could ruin their transfer window by spending £25m on Cantwell

You’d be hard-pressed to find a Leeds United fan with serious complaints about how their transfer window has gone.

The Whites have spent almost £100m on a litany of new talent from across Europe’s top leagues, but it looks as though their transfer business isn’t done yet.

Todd Cantwell has seemingly been one of United’s top domestic targets over the past few weeks, and we’ve recently learnt what Norwich’s asking price is for the attacking midfielder.

Do Leeds need another signing before the domestic deadline?

The Sun’s Alan Nixon has reported that the Canaries want £25m for the 22-year-old, and if Leeds pay that this transfer window could go from being a good one to a bad one.

Now, we aren’t saying that Cantwell is a terrible player, but Victor Orta has looked like a brilliant negotiator this summer, and spending £25m on a man with just one top-flight season to his name would represent a daylight robbery.

Cantwell was valued at just £900k by transfermarkt at the end of the 2018/19 season, and while they have him down as an £18m player now, there’s no evidence to back up that he will be able to reproduce last season’s form over a sustained period of time.

How many times have Leeds United won the FA Cup?

If you’re spending £25m on any player you need to be absolutely certain that they’re going to improve your team, but Cantwell isn’t what you would call a bona fide Premier League star, at the moment he’s a one-season wonder, and while he may build on that campaign and prove himself, £25m isn’t a fee that you want to gamble on a player like that. Indeed, whilst he did manage six goals and two assists last term, he failed to provide a single goal contribution after New Year’s Day.

Cantwell could easily come in and flop and that would leave Leeds with egg on their faces and £25m less in their bank account, and while there is currently an argument to make that United won the transfer window, that argument will fall apart if a big-money move for the Norwich man backfires.
