Leeds United still have work to do in the transfer window.

The Whites have spent almost £90m so far since being promoted, but despite their huge outlay, the Yorkshire club still haven’t bolstered all the positions they’ve been targeting.

Leeds have had high-profile pursuits of central-midfielders and wingers not come to fruition with moves for the likes of Michael Cuisance and Ryan Kent not coming off.

Luckily, United are seemingly closing in on a winger, with Rennes’ Brazilian wide man Raphinha strongly linked, and despite any deal with an initial £17m looking exciting, it’s hard to argue that this is a necessary move, especially after what we saw on Saturday.

Indeed, the game against Manchester City at Elland Road acted as something of a breakout performance for Ian Poveda, who earned lots of plaudits for his second-half performance where he consistently got the better of Benjamin Mendy.

The youngster completed two dribbles, while also drawing two fouls and playing one key pass, and if he can keep that type of form up there’s no reason why he couldn’t push Helder Costa for a starting spot.

However, it now looks as though that isn’t going to be the case, with Raphinha coming in as primarily a right-sided player, appearing 27 times on that flank last season for Rennes.

Of course, it remains to be seen just how good Raphinha is at this level, and he could end up justifying his transfer fee in the coming months, but right now it seems as though those funds would be better used in other areas of the squad, particularly in midfield where United still need reinforcements after missing out on Cuisance.

Let’s just hope that this doesn’t ultimately affect Poveda’s long-term development as he looked like a future star against his old club on Saturday.
