Leeds United have been linked with several names ahead of the January transfer window as director of football Victor Orta looks to strengthen Jesse Marsch's playing squad.

A new left-back seems to be very high on the agenda, given how problematic the position has been with makeshift titan Pascal Struijk set to remain in the role until an alternative can be sourced in the transfer market, meaning the erratic and inconsistent Junior Firpo is out of favour, as per The Athletic's Phil Hay.

If the Spanish supremo and his staff are keeping an eagle eye on the World Cup, then he'd have witnessed an absolute masterclass from one of the club's mooted targets, Raphael Guerreiro.

"Leeds like Guerreiro a lot, and they think he would be an ideal fit. If he was available in January, I believe they would do it – but they are happy to wait for him until the summer," revealed journalist Graeme Bailey to TEAMtalk only last month.

90min have also suggested that the Whites have had scouts watching him over the past few months too, so he certainly seems like a key name in the potential shortlist of left-back arrivals.

In Portugal's 6-1 demolition of Switzerland in Tuesday night's final last-16 clash in Qatar, the Borussia Dortmund dynamo really caught the eye.

Ten minutes after the break, he found himself in a rare goalscoring position, rounding off a slick passing move and then in the game's dying embers, the goalscorer became the architect for Rafael Leao to bag the sixth and final strike.

But his eye-catching display was more than just two goal contributions in a whitewash victory...

Only two other A Seleção players registered more touches than the left-back (53), which meant that a lot of their play went through him out wide and with that possession, Guerreiro managed the most progressive passes (six) ahead of Joao Felix.

Also via FBref, the 28-year-old whiz was strong defensively, winning all of his tackling attempts (two of two), as well as registering one clearance and one interception.

The Dortmund star has previously been described as an "upgrade" to Firpo by journalist Pete O'Rourke when speaking to Football FanCast, whilst his domestic manager Edin Terzic once dubbed him an "amazing player" who "makes things happen" to ESPN reporter Archie Rhind-Tutt.

Given the obvious need for a new left-back at Elland Road, Orta would be foolish to not launch a move for Guerreiro heading into January. With a summer asking price of around £22m, it remains to be seen if the £58k-per-week dynamo will be available for a similar amount this winter.

Either way, his masterclass of a display for Portugal will certainly have Leeds eager to bring him to west Yorkshire and that's what must happen to end Marsch's one big issue.

AND in other news, Leeds dodged with World Cup flop caught "playing against his big brothers", he would've been Firpo 2.0...
