Leeds United: James Marshment drops Raphinha update

Leeds United journalist James Marshment has shared an update regarding the current situation and immediate future of Raphinha.

What’s the latest?

In a recent Twitter post, Marshment had this to say on the matter.

He said: “Raphinha future: This week promises to be significant in deciding where his future lies. Arsenal are currently in the box seat – but Raphinha still wants Barcelona, while Leeds are standing by their valuation. Something may have to give.”

Since arriving at Elland Road back in October 2020 from Rennes in a deal worth £17m, the 25-year-old has scored 17 goals and delivered 11 assists in 66 appearances across all competitions.

This highlights just how important he is and has been for the team over the past two seasons.

In the two Premier League campaigns he’s had with Leeds, the Brazil international has racked up 153 shots at goal, 228 shot-creating actions, 165 crosses and 267 dribble attempts, showing just how reliant the Whites have been on him in an attacking regard.

Leeds fans will be gutted

During the previous league campaign, Raphinha not only ended the season with more goal contributions (14) than any other player in Jesse Marsch’s squad, but he also topped the list for the average of shots (2.5), key passes (1.9) and dribbles made per game (1.8) at the Yorkshire club.

His overall performances earned the former Rennes star a solid season rating of 6.97 from WhoScored, making him the highest-rated outfield player at Leeds.

This shows why the attacker has been linked with a move away from the club and why everyone at Leeds would be keen to keep hold of him or at least get their full value from him in terms of a potential transfer fee.

Last week, it was reported that the Yorkshire club had rejected a bid from Arsenal for the winger, who the club reportedly value at £65m.

Will Raphinha be a Leeds player next season?

While the Leeds supporters will undoubtedly be happy that the club turned down Arsenal’s initial bid, it will be bad news for them to hear that the winger wants to join Barcelona and wave goodbye to his current club.

Moving forward, with this week reportedly being an important one in terms of Raphinha’s next step, the best thing Leeds can hope for is that a resolution that suits the club is found sooner rather than later.
