The Athletic’s Phil Hay has dropped a Leeds United transfer update on their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer.
Reports in recent days have suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are one of the clubs interested in landing the English ace on a season-long loan as they look to strengthen their options in the middle of the park, and Hay has now delivered an update on where things stand at the moment.
Taking to Twitter, he said: “Bielsa is very keen on him. Likes his attributes and skill set.”
He then added: “Leeds do prefer to have permanent options and they would try for one but like with Ben White, they’re not always possible. Palace battling very hard for Gallagher too. He’s the midfielder they’ve been targeting.”
During the 21-year-old’s loan spell at Championship club Swansea, Sky Sports pundit Keith Andrews hailed Gallagher’s “unbelievable” energy and even made the comparison to former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard for his style of play.
The former Blackburn midfielder said: “The one thing he has got is a fantastic engine, much like Lee Bowyer or Frank Lampard – it’s amazing, the resemblances between those two in their younger years particularly. But for me, he’s a classic No 8; he has an unbelievable energy, he does the ugly side of the game, but you have to let him off the leash and let him get forward.”
At just 21, Gallagher is another largely unproven but talented English prospect from a top-flight club who Leeds are keen on taking to Elland Road, much like they did with Ben White – and you only need to look at how he’s developed into a potential big-money signing for Arsenal to see the quality that he has.
The Chelsea ace could enjoy a similarly successful loan spell at Leeds like White did, and develop into a real top-class player simply by working under Bielsa and actually playing week in, week out.
He hasn’t had that opportunity at Stamford Bridge, and last season saw him having to try and play in a West Brom team desperately trying to fight against relegation – not exactly the most ideal of situations in which to showcase his talent.
Bielsa will fancy his chances of rejuvenating Gallagher and bringing out his potential at Elland Road, and given Hay’s insight on how the Leeds boss apparently feels about him, it’s a move which will surely have Whites fans excited.
Meanwhile, Leeds must avoid another Augustin howler…
