YouTuber Conor McGilligan has suggested that Leeds United could still be in the market to sign a new centre-back before the January window shuts.

What’s the word?

The latest news coming out of the Premier League club is that defender Diego Llorente is set to join Roma on loan for the rest of the season with a potential obligation to buy for £18m in the summer.

In terms of defensive incomings, the Whites are also closing in on a deal for Portuguese centre-back Diogo Monteiro. However, the 18-year-old won't likely be expected to make an impact for Jesse Marsch's first team immediately.

With that in mind, when talking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan has suggested this could open up the door for a new defensive incoming.

He explained (03:55): “Even though Monteiro's coming in, it does look like he's going to be going straight into the development squad.

"So Leeds are going to be down a body, really when you look at the makeup of that first team squad.

"So do not be surprised if United go out there and get a centre-back."

He then urged the club to get someone else in, concluding. (6:00): “I would like us to go out and get a centre-back, obviously with us letting Llorente go.”

One in, one out

If the Whites are going to earn £18 from Roma with this Llorente deal, they certainly might feel as though they have a bit of extra cash to go and spend on a new signing before the winter window ends.

However, they have already spent a decent chunk of cash so far in January with Max Wober and Georginio Rutter both arriving and Weston McKennie also looks set to join the club too.

And with Monteiro possibly coming in, it's not as if they haven't got some depth to fill any void left by Llorente – even though he has played just seven senior games up to this point in his career.

On top of that, Wober has already started to establish himself under Marsch but it remains unclear if he will play at centre-back or left-back in the long term. Perhaps if he's viewed as a fullback, the club will indeed go in for a central defensive signing late on in the window.
