The Athletic's David Ornstein has revealed a major boost for Leeds United over Patrick Bamford.

What's the story?

The striker has been one of the shining lights of Marcelo Bielsa's side's return to the Premier League this season, bagging 15 goals in 35 games in the competition - his latest of course being in the 3-1 win over Spurs at the weekend.

Now, Ornstein has revealed that last summer, the 27-year-old signed a new one-year extension to his existing contract at Elland Road, and so his deal now runs until June 2023.

The journalist added: "The news will be welcomed by many supporters in Leeds, where Bamford has emerged as an increasingly popular and important figure under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa.

"The increased length of Bamford’s terms would not prevent him from being sold if a suitable bid arrived, but it gives his employers an element of certainty and puts them in a position of strength."

Bielsa will be buzzing

The news from Thorp Arch that Bamford's contract actually runs until the summer of 2023 will be a welcome relief for both Bielsa and the club's fans, who have seen the striker grow into a fine Premier League centre-forward.

With every goal that he scores, the list of his admirers will no doubt grow, but with his contract still having a couple of years to run, it means that Leeds won't be bullied into accepting a low-ball offer for one of their main men.

Keeping a hold of the core that Bielsa has built over the seasons at Elland Road is crucial to keeping the kind of team spirit and attitude that the Leeds boss has helped create, and Bamford has been one of the main reasons why the Whites find themselves both in the Premier League, and even looking at the European places above them.

Meanwhile, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa must finally unleash this academy starlet who's "the future"...
