Leeds: Ben Jacobs drops Armando Broja update

Ben Jacobs has dropped an update on the future of reported Leeds United transfer target Armando Broja.

What’s the latest?

Speaking on a recent episode of the NUFC Matters YouTube show, the CBS journalist revealed that all of Newcastle United, West Ham United, Everton, Leicester City and Leeds are interested in a move for the £30m Chelsea centre-forward this summer – with the Whites said to be one of the clubs who have made an enquiry for the 20-year-old Albania international.

Regarding the interest in the striker, Jacobs said: “So you’ve sort of loosely speaking got Newcastle, West Ham – historically anyway – and Everton looking at Broja. And then, to a lesser extent – but they’ve made enquiries – Leicester and Leeds United – who also need a striker.

“Incredible” for Leeds

With it being well documented that Victor Orta is looking to bring a new centre-forward into Elland Road prior to the closure of the summer transfer window on September 1, the argument that Broja would be an incredible player for the Spaniard to add to Jesse Marsch’s attacking arsenal is an easy one to make.

Indeed, the 20-year-old is undoubtedly one of the most exciting Chelsea prospects to have graduated from the Blues academy in recent years, having scored an eye-catching 21 goals and registered five assists over his 53 appearances for the club’s various youth sides at Cobham over the last few seasons.

The £19.8m-rated forward took his development in the professional game one step further in 2021/22, enjoying a fine season-long loan spell at Southampton, where he would score nine goals and provide one assist over his 38 competitions for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s outfit – an impressive feat considering the Saints’ underwhelming 15th place finish in the league last time out.

However, aside from his evident finishing ability, the £8.5k-per-week talent also boasts an impressive knack of progressing the ball towards the opposition goal – with FBref ranking the Albanian in the top 13% of forwards in Europe’s big five league and European competitions for dribbles completed per 90 over the last 365 days.

Furthermore, the player who Marvyn Harrison dubbed “incredible” and Jake Heasman labelled “scary” also poses a significant threat aerially – both in a defensive and attacking capacity – with FBref also ranking the youngster in the top 13% of strikers for aerials won over the past 12 months.

What month did Marcelo Bielsa's tenure come to an unfortunate end?

And, considering the fact that these two metrics are somewhat weak points in Patrick Bamford’s game – with FBref ranking the Leeds number nine in the bottom 25% of forwards for dribbles completed and the bottom 22% for aerials duels won – it is clear to see that Broja would offer Marsch something different to the England international up top.

As such, should Orta manage to get a deal over the line for the 14-cap international this summer, it is evident that Broja would make an incredible addition to the Whites’ attacking arsenal in their 2022/23 campaign – leading us to believe that the Spaniard simply must do all he can to beat Leeds’ Premier League rivals to the signing of the 20-year-old in the coming weeks.
