Leeds United remain interested in a deal to bring Azzedine Ounahi to the Premier League in the January transfer window.

What's been said?

That's according to Pete O'Rourke, with the journalist revealing in a recent interview with Football FanCast that, following a number of reports linking Victor Orta with a move for the Angers SCO central midfielder this month, the 22-year-old is indeed a player on the director of football's shortlist of targets this winter.

However, the transfer insider went on to suggest that, following the Morocco international's remarkable performances at the Qatar World Cup last year, the Ligue 1 side are now looking for a considerable fee in order to part with Ounahi prior to January's transfer deadline - with £25m reported to be the player's asking price.

Regarding the Whites' interest in Ounahi, O'Rourke said: "Obviously he's been on Leeds' list for most of this transfer window but it's agreeing a deal with Angers that has been the issue. They're looking for top dollar for Ounahi - who obviously increased his price tag with his performances at the World Cup for Morocco, so I can understand their stance."

"Absolutely incredible"

Considering just how impressive Ounahi was at the World Cup this winter, it is not difficult to understand why Orta would be interested in a deal to bring the 22-year-old to Elland Road in the coming days - especially following the recent departure of Mateusz Klich.

Indeed, over his seven appearances in Qatar, the £11m-rated talent was in exceptional form for his country, creating one big chance, as well as enjoying an average of 51.3 touches, making 0.9 key passes, playing 1.1 long balls, being successful with 1.4 dribbles and completing 30.7 total passes - at a success rate of 83% - per game.

The £10k-per-week youngster also caught the eye in more workmanlike metrics, making an average of 1.3 tackles, one interception, regaining possession 0.6 times and winning 4.7 duels - at a success rate of 66% - per match.

These returns saw the player who Jose Mourinho dubbed "absolutely incredible" and football talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed a "revelation" average a simply sensational Sofascore statistical rating of 6.97, ranking him as the Atlas Lions' fifth-best performer in the tournament - playing a key role in his country's remarkable run to the semi-finals of the competition.

As such, taking into account just how impressive Ounahi was on the biggest stage in world football this winter, coupled with Leeds currently having a vacancy in the middle of the park, should Orta believe that the 22-year-old can repeat his World Cup form following a move to Elland Road, £25m would appear to be an absolute steal for the midfielder.

However, with a matter of days remaining of the January transfer window, the Spaniard must move quickly if he wishes to land the Moroccan this winter - or else the Whites could end up missing out on a potentially incredible acquisition, with Leicester City also reported to be keen on a move for Ounahi this month.
