Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update on the future of reported Leeds United transfer target Cody Gakpo.

What's the latest?

In a recent article for CaughtOffside, the Italian journalist revealed that the PSV Eindhoven winger has always been on Victor Orta's list of transfer targets in the summer window, however, the Eredivisie side are hoping to retain the 23-year-old's services for at least one more year.

As a result, Ruud van Nistelrooy's outfit are demanding a figure of up to €45m (£39m) in order to part with the Netherlands international ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, with Arsenal also said to be considering a move for the forward's over the remainder of the current market.

In his column, Romano wrote: "At the moment, despite some speculation involving Arsenal, the situation is quiet around Cody Gakpo. He has always been on the list for Leeds United, but not in the first position, just after Luis Sinisterra, who was a priority of the club.

"PSV Eindhoven are hoping to keep him and his price tag has always been around €40-45m. He may be a name to monitor in the coming weeks as a big opportunity for many clubs. But PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy hopes to keep him at the club."

"Enormous" signing

While it is true that Orta has already sealed the signing of a new winger this summer, with Luis Sinisterra arriving in a £21m deal from Feyenoord earlier this month, it is being reported that the Spanish director of football could still make a move for another wide attacker this summer - and Gakpo would certainly look to be an excellent target to pursue.

Indeed, over his 27 Eredivisie appearances in 2021/22, the £27m-rated forward was in astonishing form, scoring 12 goals, providing 13 assists and creating 11 big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 3.0 shots, making 2.6 key passes and completing 2.9 dribbles per game.

These returns saw the £7.4k-per-week talent average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.51, ranking him as PSV's best performer in the division and the fourth-best player in the Dutch top flight as a whole last time out.

The player who Wierd Duk labelled an "enormous" prospect also impressed on the European stage last season, scoring seven goals and registering one assist over his 15 appearances in Champions League qualifying, the Europa League and the Europa Conference League.

Furthermore, the prospect of Gakpo and Sinisterra - who himself scored 12 goals, provided seven assists and averaged a SofaScore match rating of 7.51 over his own 30 Eredivisie outings in 2021/22 - lining up on either flank at Elland Road next season is sure to be an incredibly tantalising one for both Leeds supporters and Jesse Marsch alike.

As such, while the PSV starlet would cost the Whites a pretty penny, the 23-year-old would undoubtedly be a signing that could help to propel Leeds to a completely different level in the upcoming Premier League campaign - leading us to believe that Orta simply must launch a late move for the winger over the remainder of the summer transfer window.
