Leeds United could make a late move to sign Cody Gakpo over the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

What's the talk?

That's according to Melissa Reddy, with the Sky Sports journalist recently revealing on Sky Sports News (via The Sun) that, following a number of reports linking Victor Orta with a move for the PSV Eindhoven forward this summer, the Whites are indeed one of the clubs in the running to sign the 23-year-old prior to Thursday's transfer deadline.

However, Reddy went on to state that the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United and Southampton are also interested in the Netherlands international, who is believed to be available for a figure in the region of €45m (£38m) including add-ons.

Concerning the interest in Gakpo, the Sky Sports reporter said: "Southampton have had a bid rejected for him. Newcastle have been circling, there's talk of Leeds registering interest.

"It's not surprising that a lot of Premier League clubs are looking at him. One of the other names I was told to keep an eye out for is Arsenal, who have said they would like to enhance their offensive options."

A big coup

Considering the sheer amount of potential Gakpo evidently possesses, coupled with the sheer number of Premier League clubs believed to be interested in the 23-year-old's signing this summer, should Orta manage to get a deal over the line for the winger in the next 48 hours, it would undoubtedly represent a big coup for the Whites' director of football.

Indeed, Gakpo has started the 2022/23 campaign in breathtaking fashion, with the £27m-rated talent having already scored three goals, registered three assists and created four big chances over just three Eredivisie appearances, in addition to taking an average of 4.3 shots - 2.3 of which have hit the target - making 2.7 key passes and completing one dribble per game.

These returns have seen the £4k-p/w left-winger average a simply sensational SofaScore match rating of 8.70, not only ranking him as PSV's best performer in the league but also as the best player in the Dutch top flight as a whole.

The incredibly versatile 23-year-old - who is comfortable operating on either flank, in attacking midfield and as a centre-forward - has also scored one further goal and registered three more assists over his five fixtures in Champions League qualifying and the Johan Cruijff Schaal - taking his total haul to a quite extraordinary four goals and six assists over just eight games, averaging a direct goal involvement every 63 minutes of football played so far this season.

As such, it is clear to see exactly why Leeds would be interested in a deal to bring Gakpo to Elland Road prior to Thursday's transfer deadline - an interest that has likely intensified following Jesse Marsch's top goalscorer so far this season - Rodrigo - suffering a dislocated shoulder in the Whites' 1-1 draw with Everton on Tuesday evening.

Indeed, it would now appear as if the signing of a new forward is an absolute must for Leeds in the coming 48 hours, with Gakpo appearing something of a perfect candidate to add goals, creativity and depth to Marsch's current attacking options in LS11.
