Leeds: Fabrizio Romano drops transfer update

Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update on the next transfer target of Leeds United this summer.

What’s the latest?

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, the Italian journalist revealed that, while Victor Orta’s primary attacking target in the summer transfer window, Charles De Ketelaere, looks to be joining AC Milan, the Spaniard will not be deterred in his attempts to add a new centre-forward to Jesse Marsch’s squad ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Regarding the Whites’ pursuit of a striker, the transfer insider said: “The idea at Leeds is to keep the current squad and to add a striker. They wanted De Ketelaere from Club Brugge, but he’s now getting closer towards AC Milan so they want a striker and to keep their current team.”

Supporters will be buzzing

Considering just how short Patrick Bamford’s numerous injury setbacks left Marsch up top in 2021/22, Romano’s suggestion that, despite a deal for De Ketelaere looking unlikely at present, Orta is still planning to add a new centre-forward to Leeds’ attacking arsenal ahead of the upcoming campaign is sure to have left the Elland Road faithful buzzing.

Indeed, it was clear for all to see that, without Bamford leading the Whites line last season, Leeds were rather toothless going forwards, finding the back of the net exactly 20 times less than in 2020/21 – while the England international’s return of two goals over nine outings last term paled in comparison to his 17 goals over 38 appearances in the campaign prior.

Furthermore, with last season’s top scorer in all competitions, Raphinha, having now secured his much-anticipated £55m move from Elland Road to Barcelona, Orta and Marsch must find a way to not only add goals to the Whites’ attack in 2022/23 but also replace those lost in the departure of the Brazil international.

What month did Marcelo Bielsa's tenure come to an unfortunate end?

As such, Romano’s claim that the director of football is prioritising the signing of a new striker this summer is undoubtedly good news for everyone involved with the club – as it is clear to see that Marsch is in rather desperate need of attacking reinforcements if he is to avoid another fight for Premier League survival next season.
