Leeds: Beren Cross drops £70m transfer claim

Leeds United will receive a number of offers for their first-team players in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

Transfer Focus

That’s according to a claim made by Beren Cross, with the journalist revealing in a recent Q&A on Leeds Live that, should Jesse Marsch’s side suffer relegation to the Championship this season, there will more than likely be offers made from the continent for the likes of Junior Firpo, Robin Koch, Fernando Llorente and Rodrigo.

When asked who could potentially be on the way out of Elland Road in the event of relegation, Cross said: “Firpo, Koch, Llorente and Rodrigo would be tough ones to call. I am assuming they will have clauses which drop their wages down in the event of relegation, but none of them signed up for second-tier football. There would be interest from the continent in all four.”

Supporters surely buzzing

It is undeniable that each of the four aforementioned players have offered Leeds something during their time at the club, but considering just how much money was spent on the quartet in transfer fees, in addition to all being on rather hefty weekly wages, it may not be the worst thing in the world for Victor Orta to offload Firpo, Koch, Llorente and Rodrigo this summer.

Do you think Leeds will stay up this season?

No

Indeed, Rodrigo’s return of 13 goals, three assists and six big chances created over his 53 Premier League appearances is not exactly disastrous. However, when taking into account that the Whites paid Valencia £26m for the forward’s services, along with handing the Spain international a four-year deal on £100k-per-week, it is clear that the second striker has not lived up to his price tag nor his wage.

Meanwhile, all three of the £55k-per-week Firpo (a £13m signing from Barcelona), the £75k-per-week Llorente (an £18m signing from Real Sociedad) and the £50k-per-week Koch (a £13m signing from SC Freiburg) have also had disappointing seasons this time out, averaging SofaScore match ratings of 6.56, 6.82 and 6.54 respectively.

As such, when taking into account that the club spent around £70m on the signings of the four players, and with the quartet currently earning around £280k-per-week at Elland Road, it is quite clear to see that, from their returns this season, they are worth nowhere near this amount of money.

He is currently the club-record signing...

Therefore, Cross’ claim that the club will receive offers for all four of Rodrigo, Firpo, Koch and Llorente this summer is sure to leave supporters buzzing. Relegation clause or not, the four players’ abilities simply do not reflect their enormous salaries, and that money could quite easily be put to better use by Jesse Marsch this summer.
