Leeds: Victor Orta in continued Mergim Berisha talks

Leeds United remain in talks regarding a deal to bring Mergim Berisha to Elland Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Omer Celikbasli, with the Spor journalist revealing in a recent interview with MOT Leeds News that, despite Fenerbahce SK demanding a figure of €5m (£4.2m) in order to part with the centre-forward, Victor Orta is not willing to pay such an amount for the 24-year-old – with it being reported that the Whites value the former Germany U21 closer to the £1.75m mark.

Regarding about the Premier League side’s interest in Berisha, Celikbasli said: “Fenerbahce want €5m euros (£4.2m). Leeds do not want to pay that much. That’s why the constant talks continue.”

Absolute steal

While it is true that, following Berisha’s £4.5m move to Fenerbahce, the striker has not enjoyed the best form of his career – scoring seven goals and registering three assists over 31 appearances last season – should Jesse Marsch believe he can help the 24-year-old refind his previous level of performance, a £1.75m deal for the German could prove to be an absolute steal for the Whites.

Indeed, over his 28 Austrian Bundesliga fixtures under the management of Marsch at Red Bull Salzburg back in 2020/21, the £5.4m-rated forward was in astonishing form, scoring 14 goals, providing ten assists and creating 13 big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 2.7 shots, making 1.3 key passes and completing 0.5 dribbles per game.

These metrics saw the £29k-per-week talent who Max Camilleri dubbed “amazing” average a quite remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.28, not only ranking him as the American manager’s fifth-best player in the league but also as the joint seventh-best in the division as a whole. On that evidence, he would be quite the signing for Leeds, and at a bargain price too.

The former German youth international also impressed over his six outings in the Champions League that year, bagging four goals, registering two assists and creating three big chances, as well as taking an average of 2.8 shots, making 1.5 key passes and completing 1.5 dribbles per game – with these returns seeing Berisha average a simply sensational SofaScore match rating of 7.18.

What month did Marcelo Bielsa's tenure come to an unfortunate end?

From all of this, it is clear to see that, while there is an argument to be made that the top flight of Austrian football is a completely different kettle of fish to the Premier League, the 24-year-old has nevertheless proven that he has the ability to make his mark within Europe’s most prestigious club competition – suggesting that he could do similar in the top flight of English football.

As such, should Marsch truly believe that Berisha has what it takes to make it in England, the striker’s potential £1.75m fee could easily prove to be some of the best money Leeds spend in the summer transfer window.
