Leeds United have been linked with a move for Viktor Gyokeres ahead of the January transfer window and now a new update has emerged on the player's future that could be a huge setback for the club's transfer plans.

What's the latest?

Coventry City manager Mark Robins has spoken out to dismiss speculation that his star striker will leave the Championship club in the new year after being linked with a move to the Premier League.

Robins told Coventry Live:

“Viktor is going nowhere. I can tell you now he is going nowhere in January. Absolutely no chance. I’ve spoken to Vik.”

It's bad news for Marsch

There is no doubt that the latest update from the Coventry boss is bad news for Jesse Marsch as strengthening the centre-forward position and further increasing the goal contributions in the team should be a top priority for the West Yorkshire club in January.

Leeds are currently 15th in the top flight and are just two points clear of the relegation zone as they head into 2023, however, they have scored 23 goals so far.

Although the Whites have not been struggling for goal contributions over their first 16 outings, adding depth to the central role in the front three could be hugely advantageous to Marsch.

Patrick Bamford has struggled to maintain his fitness suffering numerous injury problems since the beginning of the 2021/22, season whilst Joe Geldhart has failed to hit the ground running this season with no goals scored over 12 appearances so far, which has led to Rodrigo moving out of position from second striker to the trusted forward leading the line in the most advanced central position.

As a result, the signing of Gyokeres could have been the perfect opportunity for Marsch to bring in a proper number nine who can dominate the position to form a partnership with Rodrigo in the attacking threat to increase the goals scored even more at Elland Road.

The £20m Swedish striker - who was hailed "unbelievable" by his manager Robins - is currently the joint top goal-scorer in the Championship with 12 goals and one assist over 24 appearances this term.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see whether Leeds continues with Rodrigo in the striker role, pursue Gyokeres despite Robins' comments or identifies another potential target to bolster the position over the second half of the season.
