Leeds interested in Harry Winks swoop

Leeds United have an interest in Harry Winks…

What’s the word?

That’s according to The Athletic’s Charlie Ecclesshare, who delivered an update on the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder to GIVEMESPORT this week.

“Everton were interested then cooled that interest. Leeds is a name I’ve heard mentioned, but as I’ve reported, I don’t think that’s going to go any further, so it’s interesting as to who really pushes for him.”

Should Leeds make a move for Harry Winks?

The reliable journalist has revealed that there is some interest from the Yorkshire giants but remained coy on whether a deal can be struck before deadline day.

What is clear, however, is that the England midfielder is available for a transfer this month and he would be a great signing for the Whites.

Bye-bye Klich

Leeds director of football Victor Orta has spent nearly £100m on six new signings so far this summer, including the exciting acquisitions of Tyler Adams, Brenden Aaronson and Darko Gyabi.

The trio, along with fellow recent arrival Marc Roca, all play in midfield, so it may seem like the position isn’t something of a priority. However, the long-serving Mateusz Klich, who was signed by Thomas Christiansen in 2017, has been linked with a departure in the last few weeks.

Truth be told, the Poland international – who will want to secure his place in their World Cup squad this winter – has struggled for form at Elland Road over the past 12 to 18 months.

Last season, Klich was Marsch’s 16th-best performer with an average WhoScored rating of 6.37. Only three other players who started 15 or more games managed worse.

Such performances led to criticism. Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison described him as “non-existent“, whilst LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross even suggested that he got “bullied” in the game against relegated Watford.

Winks could be a considerable upgrade in the engine room, considering he has maintained a position at Spurs until the arrival of Antonio Conte in north London.

He is currently the club-record signing...

It’s thought that he would be available for just £20m, which for a homegrown and experienced Premier League talent is pretty reasonable – not to mention that he was once likened to Spain greats Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

“Harry has the profile of the midfield player perfect,” once claimed his former manager Mauricio Pochettino (via ESPN). “When we talk about midfielders, because you like to use Spanish midfielders like Xavi and Iniesta, he’s like this type of player, this capacity.”

With 128 top-flight and 43 European appearances, Winks would add plenty of much-needed experience to Marsch’s midfield and if Klich is to leave, then Orta must revisit the Spurs midfielder as he’s ready to be signed by a willing club this summer.
