Leeds United are set to reignite their interest in Viktor Gyokeres heading into the summer transfer window...

What's the latest on Viktor Gyokeres to Leeds?

That's according to Football Insider, who claim that the Whites will continue to pursue the 24-year-old despite the arrival of club-record signing Georginio Rutter in January.

It's thought that Championship outfit Coventry City will demand around £10-12m for his signature, whilst the Yorkshire giants view him as a key target no matter what division they find themselves in next season.

Gyokeres is under contract in the Midlands until the summer of 2024, so the Sky Blues aren't in the strongest negotiating position come the summer.

Leeds eye statement summer signing

There is plenty to suggest that the Coventry forward is capable of making the step-up to the Premier League in the near future, with FootballTransfers likening him to former top-flight stars such as Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Erik Lamela (Tottenham Hotspur) and Raul Jimenez (Wolverhampton Wanderers).

Only one player has bagged more goals than the former Brighton and Hove Albion academy graduate in the second tier this season, with the 24-year-old making it 15 goals from 33 outings on Saturday afternoon as he fired Mark Robins' side to a 2-1 win over Sunderland.

Such exploits have seen plenty of praise come in for the Sweden international.

Earlier in the campaign, Sky Blues teammate Maxime Biamou hailed him as "unplayable," whilst his manager waxed lyrical over his mentality and attitude, also describing him as "unbelievable."

"That's just his mentality, he's really focused, he's a brilliant kid, he's really good to have around, he's honest, he's straightforward, he's focused, he's determined," he said.

Not only is Gyokeres an undoubted goal machine, however.

The 6 foot 2 sensation is a real handful for defenders, combining pace and power and is also a fine progressor of the ball. Indeed, when compared to his positional peers in the best eight divisions outside of the big five in Europe, he ranks very favourably.

Per FBref, the Swede is among the top 1% for progressive carries, the top 2% for shot-creating actions and successful take-ons, and the top 4% for touches in the opposition box per 90, further highlighting his ability besides finding the net consistently.

You could argue that Gyokeres is a ready-made fit for the Premier League and all of the evidence above also further backs up claims that he could be a "statement" signing for Leeds, as Manchester Evening News contributor Conor McGilligan once suggested.

Landing a proven 24-year-old marksman for just £12m could well be a stroke of genius from sporting director Victor Orta and co, irrespective of the division that Javi Gracia's side finds themselves in.
