Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans has entered contract talks with the Foxes after an impressive 2020/21 campaign.
What’s the story?
According to the Leicester Mercury, the 24-year-old is in negotiations with the Midlands outfit, who are hoping to extend his current deal which expires in two years’ time.
The Belgium international has played a pivotal part in the success of Brendan Rodgers’ side over the last couple of seasons, and the FA Cup holders are keen to tie down one of their key assets for the foreseeable future.
Fans will be buzzing
Tielemans has been linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium in recent weeks, with Liverpool outlined as a potential destination, so this latest revelation will surely have the club’s supporters buzzing.
He bagged the winning goal at Wembley Stadium against Chelsea back in May as Leicester secured their maiden FA Cup crown, and his growing importance in Rodgers’ set-up makes him a crucial component to the Foxes.
The former Monaco man has previously expressed his happiness at Leicester, declaring the 2016 Premier League champions are a club set-up to win trophies.
When asked if he could achieve his career objectives at City earlier in the year, Tielemans said: “Yes, why not? This is a club where you have the best environment you can have, especially with this new training ground. The people around you just want the best for you.
“It’s brilliant to be here. I really like it here. We’ll see what’s coming in the future.
“But I think the environment is just perfect to win trophies here. You can’t predict the future, but I think everything around the club and inside the club is made for it.”
It remains to be seen whether an agreement can be agreed between Tielemans and Leicester over a new contract. The Foxes are expected to offer vastly improved terms on the maestro’s present £33,000 per week wage packet, but it’s certainly a good sign for the club’s fanbase that negotiations have already begun.
Rodgers will be hoping to finally break into the Champions League qualification places next season and tying down a player once described as “top class” by Pep Guardiola would be a significant boost to Leicester’s hopes and ambitions.
