Leicester City are reportedly leading the race to sign Schalke 04 defender Ozan Kabak after an impressive stint on loan at Liverpool last season.
According to Patrick Berger, chief reporter for German outlet Sport1, the Foxes are at the front of the queue for the 21-year-old’s services as they search for Wes Morgan’s successor.
He tweeted: “#S04 have given Ozan Kabak one more week off to clarify his future. Leicester City is leading the race to land the 21-year-old defender. ‘There are enquiries for Ozan’, Schalke sports director Rouven Schröder confirms, ‘but no official bid yet!’ Asking price €15m.”
After recording a second consecutive fifth-placed finish in the Premier League last season, Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has wasted no time in strengthening his first team squad this summer.
Kabak is another player who could bolster the Foxes’ ranks after Liverpool opted against making his stay on Merseyside permanent for £18m.
An injury crisis at centre-back saw Jurgen Klopp turn to the Turkey international last January, and he recovered from a slow start to life in England to make nine Premier League appearances, helping the Reds to Champions League qualification.
However, Klopp decided to bring in Ibrahima Konate instead, leaving Kabak searching for a different exit route from the Veltins Arena following Schalke’s relegation from the Bundesliga in 2020/21.
Several clubs such as RB Leipzig, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United have also been credited with an interest in the youngster, but news that Leicester are leading the race for the defender will have Rodgers buzzing.
The Foxes manager is thought to be in the market for a new centre-back after Wes Morgan’s retirement, and Kabak has emerged as their primary transfer target.
He would be an astute Leicester signing given his age, ability and potential to grow, and if director of football Jon Rudkin can secure his services, it would mark another highly impressive transfer window for the FA Cup holders.
