Leicester City could secure their ideal heir to Wes Morgan this summer in the shape of Valencia defender Mouctar Diakhaby.
The former Foxes captain retired after the 2020/21 campaign, while Christian Fuchs also departed following a five-year spell at the King Power Stadium, leaving a sizeable hole in the club’s backline.
According to Spanish outlet AS, Diakhaby is being lined up as a potential replacement for the duo, with the 24-year-old said to be “very motivated” to join Brendan Rodgers’ side.
If Leicester are to secure the £9m-rated monster’s services, then they’ll have to see off competition from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United.
The report claims that the guarantee of first-team football at St. James’ Park is an appealing prospect to Diakhaby, although the Frenchman is also keen to work under Rodgers due to his reputation of developing young talent.
Both sides are said to have submitted requests for the centre-back, although no solid offers have been made as of yet.
Diakhaby has been placed on the transfer list at the Mestalla and is now said to be surplus to requirements by the Spanish outlet after making 27 appearances in all competitions last season.
His arrival at the current FA Cup holders would be much welcomed by Rodgers as the Northern Irish tactician aims to bolster his first-team squad.
Qualification for next term’s Europa League means Leicester will need several additions in the transfer window in order to fight on multiple fronts.
With Morgan and Fuchs departing, a new centre-back and full-back are thought to be high up on Rodgers’ wishlist and, Diakhaby could be a viable option.
Valencia have been experiencing financial difficulties over the last 12 months or so and were forced to sell several of their top performing players last summer, meaning they could be a good place to pick up a bargain over the coming months.
Diakhaby natural size and pace made him an ideal Premier League defender, while his composure and ability with the ball at his feet ensure slotting into Leicester’s system should pose few problems.
Across 24 La Liga starts, he averaged a 85% pass success rate, won 1.8 aerials and 3.8 clearances per game, which would reinforce his suitability for the English top-flight and particularly, at the King Power.
He could be the dream replacement for the retiring Morgan this summer.
As a result, director of football Jon Rudkin must sanction a swoop for the former Lyon man as Rodgers looks to take his charges one step further in 2021/22.
