Even though they don’t really spend an awful lot, the Imps have been busy racking up some impressive signings in their recent history. Their record transfer from the 2006/07 is still intact, of course, but considering it was a hefty purchase for their financial standards, that doesn’t really come as a big surprise.
Dany N’Guessan moved from Glasgow Rangers to Lincoln City in the winter transfer window of 2007 for a club record fee of £338,000 – an amount that is yet to be eclipsed almost 15 years into the future. And considering that the biggest sum they splashed until then was the £90,000 price tag they paid to Peterbourough for Francis Green in 2003/04, that was a huge jump.
They would, however, come fairly close to it in recent years, buying Gavin McCallum and Mustapha Carayol in 2010/11 for £203,000 and £162,000 respectively. Those two are their second and third most expensive signings to date, only behind N’Guessan himself.
And interestingly enough, while they have been busy buying expensive players, their sales are not as fresh, to say the least. Gareth Ainsworth’s £675,000 move to Port Vale in 1997/98 is still the biggest departure in the club’s history and it’s closely followed by £360,000 Cardiff City paid for Gavin Gordon a couple of years after that, in the 2000/01 season.
Darren Huckerby rounds off the top three with his £360,000 transfer to Newcastle United in 1995/96.
Gareth Ainsworth is a famous player for the Imps not only for the huge price tag Port Vale ended up paying for him in 1997/98 but also for everything he’s done for the club since his arrival in 1995. For those reasons, his inclusion on the list doesn’t really need much explaining to the fans or any at all, for that matter.
And then there are some other icons like Gareth McAuley, Paul Farman or Scott Kerr, all of whom warrant their place on the list of some of the most exciting and famous signings the club has ever done.
But it’s also quite difficult to choose from such a huge pool of players – Alan Marriott was brilliant between the sticks in more than 350 games he ended up playing for the Imps, Gordon Hobson for his return to the team in the late 80s after starting the career with Lincoln as well or Jamie Forrester for the sheer talent he brought to the squad.
And these are just some of the big names that come to mind…
