It was a memorable evening for Liverpool defender and Scotland captain Andy Robertson on Thursday, as a penalty shootout win against Serbia ensured that Steve Clarke's side will be taking part in the Euro 2020 competition next summer.

The tournament was meant to take place in the summer just gone but was moved to next summer because of the current viral outbreak, although that won't bother Scotland too much, as they qualified for their first major tournament since 1998 after defeating Serbia (per Sky Sports).

However, the performance itself from Robertson was not that great, as he managed to lose possession on a staggering 27 occasions, which was the most of any Scotland player who started the match (per SofaScore).

The 26-year-old, rated at up to €120m (£108m) by Football Observatory, was playing as a left-wing back, perhaps with the intention of him getting further forward with his crossing ability, but he was unable to find his teammates with any of his five crosses on the night.

He also struggled with his passing, as just 32/44 of his passes found their mark, resulting in a pass accuracy rate of just 73% which suggests that he was perhaps fortunate that Serbia weren't able to punish his sloppiness on the night.

Jurgen Klopp will surely be taking note of the left-back's disappointing performance as a left-wing back, and it may discourage him from trying the former Hull City man in that position in his side in the future.

It has not been the best start to the season for Robertson in the Premier League, as he has averaged a disappointing 6.52 rating across his eight appearances in the top-flight (per WhoScored).

This is significantly worse than the 7.11 rating he managed last season, although this is perhaps a general reflection of how the Merseyside club have struggled at the start of this season, in comparison to their almost perfect start to last year's season.

The Scotsman has impressed in Liverpool's Champions League performances, however, averaging a 7.33 rating across his three appearances so far, so the German manager will no doubt keep faith in Robertson as his starting left-back.

However, if he produces displays similar to Thursday night when back in a Liverpool shirt and is punished more heavily for it, then perhaps it won't be too long until we see summer signing Kostas Tsimikas given a chance to start by Klopp.
