Liverpool: Brendan Rodgers had a howler over Benteke signing

Brendan Rodgers almost led Liverpool to their first Premier League title back in the 2013/14 season, with the title race going down to the final day as Manchester City ultimately came out on top.

This near-miss looked like it could be the catalyst for the Anfield side to finally claim the title the following year and Rodgers added players such as Mario Balotelli, Lazar Markovic and Dejan Lovren amongst others that summer, but it turned out to be a false dawn for the club.

They finished sixth in 2015, missing out on Champions League football and suffering the indignity of losing 6-1 to Stoke City in Steven Gerrard’s final game for the Reds, and this was arguably the beginning of the end for Rodgers.

He made another few questionable signings that summer, with one particular move draining the club’s finances without much being reaped in return.

Liverpool signed Christian Benteke from Aston Villa for a whopping £32.5m in the summer of 2015 and he was expected to become the Reds’ focal point in attack, especially as he scored 49 goals in 101 appearances for Villa, almost a goal every other game.

Expectations were high for the Belgian following his move to Merseyside, and with two goals in his first five league matches, it looked like he could quickly settle into life at Liverpool and give them the goalscoring threat that they missed the season prior.

First up in this 2020/21 season quiz, how many PL goals did Mo Salah score?

It turned out to be a false dawn, with Benteke netting only another eight goals that season, costing the club £3.25m per goal and making just 42 appearances in his one and only campaign on Merseyside.

The striker left for Crystal Palace in 2016 for a reported fee of £27m, so Jurgen Klopp almost got back all of the money that his predecessor paid for the player, in what was the German’s first summer transfer window at Anfield.

Was Benteke Liverpool's worst signing under Rodgers?

Rodgers didn’t necessarily do a bad job at Liverpool, almost leading them to their first English title in 24 years, but a series of misguided signings and poor results ultimately cost him his job.

Benteke, who was labelled “woeful” by former Premier League player Stephen Elliot following a penalty miss in 2016, will arguably go down as Rodgers’ most costly mistake in charge of the Reds, especially when it comes to cash per goal.
