Liverpool have been dealing with an injury crisis over the first month of the new season and with their first Champions League game commencing this evening, Jurgen Klopp has revealed two players who will not be available for selection.

What's the latest?

The German coach took to his pre-match press conference ahead of their clash with Napoli tonight to confirm that both Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho will be unavailable after sustaining injuries.

Joens had been on the bench for the Newcastle fixture but is now back on the treatment table, with Klopp revealing:

“Curtis had, when he was out, a stress reaction in a specific bone around the tibia. It’s absolutely fine, not a problem, felt it again.

“Not as bad as the first time but bad enough not to be in team training again.”

On Carvalho, he commented: “Fabio got a massive dead leg which caused the muscle some problems.

“We hope he’ll be ready for the weekend but I’m not 100% sure.”

Another unfortunate blow

There is no doubt that this double blow will be frustrating for Klopp as he heads into the side's Champions League opener tonight, especially with a huge headache already hanging over the manager with their poor form in the Premier League.

Liverpool have had their worst ever start to a top-flight campaign under Klopp, picking up just nine points from their first six games and are currently six points adrift from Arsenal at the top of the table sitting in seventh. Therefore, the manager will be hoping his team don't bring their uninspiring performances into the prestigious European competition.

Jones is an especially frustrating case as he has already been injured for the vast majority of the season so far, and with only one appearance on the bench since returning to training, picking up a further injury problem will be a source of great annoyance.

Carvalho will be a big miss as his substitute appearances so far for Liverpool have been superb. He scored the winning goal against Newcastle United last week, with the youngster taking to his new role at the club like a duck to water. As a result, it will be disappointing for Klopp that he won't be able to lean upon his fresh legs in the last minutes of the clash with Napoli.

There is a silver lining though as Thiago Alcantara returned to full training on Monday after sustaining a hamstring injury in the first Premier League clash of the season, however, it remains to be seen if he will be match ready this evening to start in the midfield alongside Fabinho.

It will be interesting to see how Klopp lines up his team tonight against Napoli, and to see whether the manager puts his trust into new midfielder signing Arthur Melo to deliver on his debut in a red shirt over in Naples.
