Liverpool suffer Diogo Jota injury blow before Leeds United

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has delivered the latest injury news on Diogo Jota ahead of his side’s Premier League clash against Leeds United at Anfield on Wednesday night.

What’s the story?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Marcelo Bielsa’s side today, the Reds boss said: “No for tomorrow, no chance. For the final, we will see. I really don’t know in the moment. It would be easy to now say no but we will see. They are pushing but they were not on the pitch for training so that is not a good sign.

First up in this 2020/21 season quiz, how many PL goals did Mo Salah score?

“We have to see what we can do with the boys in the next few days and then we make a decision later in the week. I would love to have Bobby and Diogo available. That will not happen for tomorrow night. It is like it is.”

Huge blow for Liverpool

While the Reds managed to navigate a 3-1 victory over Norwich City at the weekend, it wasn’t without it’s scary moments, with the Canaries keeping the home side at bay for 64 minutes and actually taking the lead through Milot Rashica.

Jota’s absence is a big one for Liverpool, and it’s a testament to just how well he has settled into life at Anfield, that he has already ousted a club stalwart in Roberto Firmino and made that number nine position his own.

He’s scored an impressive 17 goals in 32 games across all competitions this campaign, including 12 of them being in the Premier League, which leaves him as the competition’s second-top scorer, only behind the Reds’ other talisman, Mohamed Salah (17).

His former teammate at Molineux, and someone who knows Liverpool well, Conor Coady, raved about the Portuguese ace after a particularly special performance against Norwich a couple of years ago, saying: “We know Diogo scores goals, but it’s everything else that he brings to the team; everything out of possession, how hard he works to win the ball back.

“We saw it numerous times against Norwich, where he’s collecting the ball in his own half and running the full length of the pitch to get us up the field, so he’s a phenomenal footballer and it’s a pleasure to have him here.”

With Manchester City of course losing at the weekend, this represents the perfect chance for Liverpool to really capitalise and ramp up the pressure on their title rivals, and doing so without Jota has made it a taller order.

What will have Klopp even more worried is the status of his Portuguese star for the cup final clash against Chelsea coming up.

Meanwhile, this Liverpool star has seen his value soar…
