Liverpool team news, injury update & predicted XI vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Liverpool host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield tonight in their third round FA Cup clash, and Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that the cup holders can give the Anfield faithful a positive spectacle after a disappointing run of form in the Premier League.

The Reds lost 3-1 to Brentford earlier this week, which has left them sixth in the table and seven points adrift of the top four. They also crashed out of the Carabao Cup early when they lost to Manchester City last month, meaning that the FA Cup is one of their only remaining chances to win some silverware this season.

In terms of injuries, Klopp has been dealt a rough hand over the campaign so far, with several key players picking up problems. Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, James Milner, Arthur Melo and Roberto Firmino will all be unavailable for selection for this clash, and they are now joined by Virgil van Dijk, who picked up a thigh injury and is set for a few weeks out of action.

The Liverpool manager took to his pre-match press conference to give an insight into the recovery time frame for the influential centre-back, saying: “It’s not short-term, and I had longer-term injuries as well in my career as a manager. So, it’s somewhere in between. He will be out for a few weeks, definitely.”

With that in mind, this is how Football FanCast expects Liverpool to line up against Wolves tonight…

Alisson Becker (GK), Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB), Ibrahima Konate (CB), Joel Matip (CB), Kostas Tsimikas (LB), Fabinho (CDM), Jordan Henderson (CM), Harvey Elliott (CM), Mohamed Salah (RW), Darwin Nunez (ST), Fabio Carvalho (LW)

We predict that Klopp will make just three changes to the team which lost to Brentford five days ago, with a relatively strong selection to compete with their Premier League opponents.

The first change we expect to see is Joel Matip returning to the defence to replace Van Dijk alongside Kostas Tsimikas, Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold in an otherwise unchanged back four.

The second change we predict is Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson reprising his role in midfield alongside Fabinho and Harvey Elliott, replacing Thiago Alcantara – who was dubbed a “coach’s dream” by former Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac – for the clash against Wolves.

The third and final change comes in the forward line, with Fabio Carvalho making an appearance in the starting line-up to replace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Indeed, although Cody Gakpo has been spotted in full team training ahead of the clash, the £40k-per-week ex-Fulham youngster will likely start on the left side of the attacking threat, with the former PSV Eindhoven star more likely coming on to make his debut in the famous red shirt in the latter stages tonight.

It will be interesting to see how strong a line-up Klopp chooses and will give an insight into how seriously the manager wants to challenge in the competition as he attempts to juggle Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup commitments whilst competing with an injury-stricken squad.
