Liverpool heading for Roberto Firmino disaster next year

Jurgen Klopp, for all his excellent transfer business over the previous few years at Liverpool, looks like he made a big mistake in the summer.

Sadio Mane, the scorer of 120 goals for the Anfield side, was allowed to leave the club for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for a bargain fee of £35m in June.

Although they have an adequate replacement in Luis Diaz out on the left wing, Liverpool have missed his presence and goals this season with the Reds sitting eighth in the top-flight, having won just three of their opening nine fixtures.

Klopp may now be heading for a repeat disaster next summer with Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old was actually signed by Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers in the summer of 2015 and he was one part of the excellent triumvirate which contained Mane and Mohamed Salah between 2017-2022, with the trio netting a combined total of 338 goals.

After a season that saw him score just 11 times in all competitions and with the club going out and signing Darwin Nunez for a club record £85m fee, it may have looked like this campaign would have been the Brazilian’s last at Anfield.

However, in just 13 appearances this season, Firmino has been sublime and has already scored eight times while registering a further four assists, sparking somewhat of a rejuvenation.

It is the Premier League where he has really shone, averaging a SofaScore rating of 7.51, the highest in the squad by a country mile – Trent Alexander-Arnold is next with 7.12 – and it certainly looks like the threat of the 23-year-old Uruguayan has relit Firmino’s fire.

First up in this 2020/21 season quiz, how many PL goals did Mo Salah score?

The forward has created three big chances, while making 1.4 key passes per game, displaying his unselfishness and by having 2.4 shots per game, he is giving himself the best possible chance to score as often as possible.

This form will surely be playing on Klopp’s mind regarding a contract extension for the player, and following the disaster he had by selling Mane, he certainly will not want to lose Firmino, especially for nothing.
