Reported Liverpool target Sofyan Amrabat would 'tick all the boxes' of what Jurgen Klopp would want in a midfielder this January.

What's the latest?

It has been widely reported that the Reds are on the lookout for a new midfielder, with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez both linked with a potential move to Anfield.

However, there are also suggestions that Klopp's side have earmarked Fiorentina midfielder Amrabat as a potential option following his sensational World Cup displays.

And speaking to FootballFanCast amid this month's winter window, journalist Pete O'Rourke has suggested the 26-year-old would be a great fit for what the Reds want to bring to Anfield:

He said: "Amrabat would definitely bring that to Jurgen Klopp's team [defensive solidity] and would be a midfielder who ticks all the boxes that Jurgen Klopp likes in his players."

The missing piece?

There has been a lot of criticism of late towards Klopp's current options in midfield, with their weaknesses on display for all to see in their recent defeat away to Brentford earlier in the week.

The Reds' display saw Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher hit out at their midfield, claiming a spot in the Champions League will not happen without signing a new midfielder this month:

"I don't know what has happened to Liverpool in terms of midfield. Liverpool have bought one midfield player in four-and-a-half years in Thiago. It is coming back to haunt them now," he said.

And their issues can not only be seen through their league position, but through the number of goals that have been conceded this season, with an apparent lack of protection from the midfield for the backline.

Looking at Amrabat as an option for the Reds, the Moroccan certainly announced himself as a seriously impressive defensive midfielder during his World Cup exploits.

According to Squawka, the midfielder was the first player in the tournament to win back possession 50 times, with 10 of those instances coming in the semi-final against France.

Amrabat has played a big role in Fiorentina's Serie A campaign this season, with 14 appearances to his name already as well as outings in the Europa Conference League (via Transfermarkt).

However, there is also believed to be long-standing interest from Tottenham Hotspur, who could also be a side that could potentially offer him Champions League football for next season.

And if Amrabat ends up staying in January, it will be interesting to see if his decision comes down to what level of European football is on offer at Anfield in the summer.
