Liverpool have suffered a number of injury concerns over the season so far and now Jurgen Klopp has been dealt another setback ahead of the team’s Premier League return.

What’s the latest?

Klopp has revealed that Roberto Firmino suffered an injury in training ahead of their Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City last night.

The Liverpool manager revealed:

“We play mainly with the players who could do all the sessions now and had a break – apart from Bobby, who unfortunately got injured two days ago in training.

“Not a big one but big enough for this period. That's why Darwin [Nunez] is now starting. He could've started anyway but Darwin is starting now.”

It’s bad news for Klopp

There is no doubt that the injury to Firmino is bad news for Klopp as Liverpool desperately need a revival in the top flight when they return to action against Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

The Reds are currently sixth in the Premier League table after a run of inconsistent performances and have fallen 15 points behind league leaders Arsenal, so picking up points in the coming games will be essential if they are to have any hope of competing over the second half of the season.

The injury blow to Firmino will surely be frustrating for the German coach as the Brazilian dynamo has been in incredible form in front of goal, despite the team struggling to dominate in the top flight.

The 31-year-old number nine - who is set to be out of contract in the summer of 2023 - has scored nine goals and delivered four assists over 21 appearances in all competitions so far this season, with a goal contribution every 105 minutes so far.

Liverpool are already without Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota as the two forwards are recovering from long-term injuries and are not expected back for at least six weeks, leaving the manager with just Mohammed Salah and Darwin Nunez to rely on as his forward options for the foreseeable.

With that being said, Klopp will surely be hoping that Firmino can return sooner rather than later as his absence could be detrimental to the aggressive kick-start needed at Anfield over the next few fixtures.
