Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly in the market for new wingers as the January transfer window fast approaches.

What's the story?

According to well-known journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Reds' hierarchy are searching for potential attacking targets due to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane's expected participation in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking on the latest instalment of his Here We Go podcast, Romano claimed that Liverpool's recruitment team will be targeting wingers rather than midfielders over the coming months.

"For January, they have a problem that Mo Salah and Sadio Mane will go to the African Cup, and this is a huge problem. This is why they're looking for wingers, I'm told, not midfielders. Let's see if they find the right opportunity," he revealed.

"They are looking for this kind of opportunity. I'm told that (Arnaut) Danjuma from Villarreal is doing fantastic, and they love this player. However, losing a key player in January would not be in Villarreal's ambition."

Liverpool fans will be buzzing

News that director of football Michael Edwards and co. are eager to sign a new wide forward over the winter window will leave large sections of Liverpool's supporters buzzing with excitement.

The importance of Salah and Mane to Klopp's charges and the German's unique system can't be overstated, with the duo contributing 23 goals and six assists between them already this season.

Therefore, at least one new acquisition may be needed in order to plug the sizeable gap that the Eygpt and Senegal internationals are set to leave.

With the 24-team tournament, postponed from last year amid the pandemic, due to get underway in Cameroon on January 9 and run until February 6, Klopp's attacking options could be left looking rather threadbare.

Players are set to leave their clubs after the Boxing Day fixtures, meaning both Salah and Mane could miss crucial Premier League clashes against Leicester City, Chelsea, Crystal Place and Brentford.

The likes of Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino are likely to be called upon in their absence, but the pair will certainly struggle to match the output of their more gifted teammates.

As a result, securing a new signing, particularly if it's Danjuma - a player with seven goals this term - may be the best way for Liverpool to continue their title charge while Salah and Mane are away. Consequently, Romano's latest revelation will please the Anfield outfit's fanbase enormously.
