An update has emerged on Brighton central midfielder Yves Bissouma, regarding Liverpool's interest in his services.

What's the talk?

According to The Express, Liverpool have made an official enquiry to Brighton over a potential deal to sign Bissouma before next Tuesday's transfer deadline.

The report claims that the Seagulls want £40m for the midfielder, who is also attracting interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.

Gini 2.0

Reds chief Michael Edwards must sanction a deal for Bissouma this month as he could be the Gini Wijnaldum replacement that has been lacking in the window thus far.

Central defender Ibrahima Konate has been the club's only senior addition in the market, despite losing Wijnaldum on a free transfer to PSG and selling Xherdan Shaqiri to Lyon. This has left Jurgen Klopp without one of his most-trusted midfielders during his tenure at Anfield, with the ex-Newcastle dynamo having played 237 competitive games for Liverpool since 2016.

Given how much Klopp relied upon Wijnaldum in the middle of the park, not replacing him before the end of the window could be a gamble by Edwards. This is why he must secure a swoop for Bissouma.

The 24-year-old powerhouse, once dubbed as "exceptional" by Gary Lineker, has already proven that he is capable of performing in the Premier League. Last season, he averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.98 in 36 appearances in the league for Brighton, whilst making 2.9 tackles and 1.8 interceptions and completing 1.5 dribbles per game.

Wijnaldum, meanwhile, averaged a score of 6.62 in 38 Premier League games for Liverpool last term. He made just 0.6 tackles and 0.7 interceptions per game, whilst also managing 0.9 dribbles per game. This suggests that Bissouma could, in fact, prove to be an upgrade on the Dutchman for the Reds.

Instead of merely filling the current PSG man's place in the squad at Anfield, Bissouma could come in and add a bit more to the team.

He has shown that he can win the ball back at an impressive rate in the top-flight whilst also dribbling well with it to aid his side in transition. That could be pivotal to Liverpool with their counter-attacks as Bissouma could then release the likes of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane away down the wings.

Therefore, Edwards must act upon his interest in the Mali international and stump up the £40m required to make him a Liverpool player.
