Liverpool could dip into the January transfer market to strengthen their squad after a disappointing start to their Premier League season and now a new update has emerged on a potential target.

What's the latest?

According to Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato, Liverpool have made contact with PSV Eindhoven to register their interest in Cody Gakpo.

As per the report, it would cost Liverpool up to €50m (£43m) to sign the talented forward but they are joined in their curiosity by Manchester United with the two Premier League clubs the two gathering the most information on the player.

Gakpo would get Anfield rocking

There is no doubt that Liverpool are in desperate need of reinforcements in the squad to reignite their spark and drive for success after displaying a run of inconsistent form throughout their Premier League campaign so far.

The Merseysiders are sixth in the top flight after picking up just 21 points from a possible 42 so far which has been an uncharacteristic effort from the team that challenged for a quadruple last season.

After losing Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi, Liverpool have certainly weakened their depth in the forward line - despite signing Uruguayan star Darwin Nunez - and if reports are to be believed Jurgen Klopp is clearly keen to add even more quality to his already world-class attacking threat.

Gakpo has been one of Europe's most prolific players in front of goal whilst occupying the left winger role at PSV and currently matches Manchester City's Erling Haaland for goal contributions (21).

The talented Netherlands international - who was dubbed a "beautiful talent" by journalist Josh Bunting - also found the back of the net in the World Cup victory over Senegal on Monday night in an exemplary performance that would've surely caught the eye of the powers at Anfield.

In terms of his capabilities and output, Gakpo is a phenom, ranking in the top 5% of his positional peers across Europe's best eight leagues outside of the top five for non-penalty goals, shot-creating actions, touches, assists and shots on goal.

Not only that, the 23-year-old star has scored 55 goals and registered 50 assists over 159 appearances for Eindhoven with a goal contribution every 98 minutes proving that he is a ruthless and consistent goal threat who could become a valuable asset to Klopp if he could continue to flourish in the Premier League.

With that being said, the signing of Gakpo would be a massive coup for Liverpool and judging by his immense numbers, remarkable potential and goal threat, he would get Anfield rocking if he could make an instant positive impact on the team. Just imagine what he and Mo Salah could do together.

It's a mouth-watering thought for everyone associated with the Anfield outfit.
