Liverpool have been linked with a move for Douglas Luiz over the last few days, and now a new update has emerged from a reliable source on a potential move for the player in the final hours of the transfer window.

What's the latest?

According to Liverpool insider DAVEOCKOP, the club are "still interested" in signing the Aston Villa midfielder today.

DAVEOCKOP tweeted:

"Liverpool are still interested in Douglas Luiz but Edu is making a late attempt to sign him for Arsenal."

It was thought that the Gunners had lodged a £20m bid earlier today.

Perfect opportunity

There is no doubt that Liverpool are in desperate need of reinforcements in the centre of the pitch following a number of injuries affecting the large majority of the midfielders in the squad.

Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita were already injured before Liverpool hosted Newcastle United at Anfield last night, however, now the club captain Jordan Henderson has picked up an injury too.

Taking to his post-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the skipper picked up a hamstring injury during the clash with the Magpies:

"Hendo is injured, he got a hamstring [injury], which is absolutely not helpful."

As a result, the signing of Luiz who is a "baller" - as described by Ty Bracey - could be the perfect opportunity for Klopp to add depth to his midfield options over the season ahead whilst the many injured midfielders recover.

The Aston Villa star has been in a back and forth with his current club over negotiations as he has less than 12 months left on his contract, now Liverpool could take advantage of his clear reluctance to commit his future by giving him the chance to make a move to Merseyside and play Champions League football.

Luiz hasn't been given too much opportunity this season to feature in the starting line-up in Steven Gerrard's side over their five Premier League games so far, making four appearances from the bench averaging at 24 minutes per game.

Last night against Arsenal it was clear that the 24-year-old had a point to prove following his limited game-time, scoring an impressive equaliser from a corner that curled in past Aaron Ramsdale less than one minute after being brought onto the pitch.

The £52k-per-week deep-lying midfielder has been the recipient of high praise for his performances in the Villa team over his tenure, with The Athletic's Aston Villa reporter hailing Luiz an "absolute joy".

With that being said, the signing of Luiz could be a crucial addition for the Reds especially during the current injury crisis they are suffering, but FSG must act fast as Arsenal are also reportedly on the tail of the player too.
