Liverpool have been reported to be in hot pursuit of Darwin Nunez for weeks now, and a reliable source has given an update on the club's next steps in getting the signing secured this summer.

What's the latest?

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has given a promising update on Liverpool's attempts to sign the Benfica striker.

The transfer insider tweeted: "Benfica have received Liverpool bid for Darwin Núñez, formal proposal after verbal talks - €80m plus bonuses.

"Discussions ongoing on €15/20m add-ons, LFC want installments. Potential five year deal. Man United in contact with agent & denying any meeting with ten Hag."

Supporters will be buzzing

Supporters will surely be buzzing that Liverpool seem close to getting the deal done for Nunez, especially with Sadio Mane expected to leave this summer, as the need for a player to fulfil the Senegal winger's goal contributions next season is crucial if the Reds are to continue competing for more trophies.

Nunez scored 34 goals and contributed four assists in all competitions for the Lisbon club in 2021/22, with his six goals in the Champions League playing a huge part in Benfica's success in progressing to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2016.

The Uruguayan striker scored against some of the biggest clubs in Europe's primary club competition, with two against Barcelona, one against Bayern Munich and a winning knock-out goal against Ajax in their round of 16 second leg clash, also scoring twice against the Reds in the quarter-finals.

Jurgen Klopp has already expressed his admiration for the 22-year-old goal machine in a press conference after Liverpool's quarter-final first leg against Benfica in the Champions League.

The German claimed (via talkSPORT): “He was physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish. Good, really good. I always say in these situations if he is healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”

With those comments in mind, it seems clear that Nunez would be welcomed with open arms to Anfield; and if Liverpool could get the deal done this summer ahead of fierce rivals Manchester United, it would be a major coup for FSG.
