Liverpool have already made three signings this summer with Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsey joining the ranks at Anfield, and a reliable source has now given a fresh update on potential transfer targets.

What's the latest?

Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has given a rare Liverpool transfer update on Twitter to quash the rumours of a move for Matheus Nunes this summer, and to give clarity on the club's situation with Jude Bellingham.

Romano tweeted: "No bid or negotiations for Matheus Nunes to Liverpool, as things stand. Nothing has changed around this deal.

"Liverpool asked for Jude Bellingham in June, but it was impossible deal - not even a negotiation, as Dortmund consider him ‘untouchable’ this summer."

Supporters will be frustrated

The Borussia Dortmund wonderkid has been a long-linked player with Liverpool, so supporters will surely be frustrated not only that another summer is passing by without signing Bellingham, but also that it seems likely that the club will strengthen the midfield at all ahead of the upcoming season.

The Reds have a number of midfielders' contracts expiring within the next 12 months, with Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner set to leave on free transfers in June 2023 as it currently stands.

Both Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara have lengthier stays at Anfield, although the pair are well into their 30s and in the latter stages of their careers, so finding heirs for the successful midfield is a pressing task for FSG and the powers at the club in the immediate future.

It was thought that Liverpool would prioritise the signing of a midfielder as they got themselves involved earlier this summer in a transfer battle with their Champions League final conquerors Real Madrid to sign Aurelien Tchouameni, but the Reds failed to secure the player's signature and he inevitably joined the European champions.

Since then, the Merseyside giants have been linked with a number of midfielders including Carlos Soler, Ibrahim Sangare and Nicolo Barella, but nothing has materialised as of yet.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool do put all their eggs in one basket and wait to see if they can capture Bellingham next summer, and supporters will hope that the Reds don't get caught short over the season as Klopp's side continue their pursuit of more trophies.
