Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has dismissed claims that the Premier League club want to terminate Arthur’s loan deal in January.
The transfer insider tweeted: “Liverpool are not planning to send Arthur Melo back to Juve in January, despite rumours coming from Italy. Arthur is working hard to find the best condition.
“Stories have been denied on both club and player side — Arthur, 100% focused on Liverpool.”
Considering that the Brazilian midfielder has only tallied 13 minutes of gameplay since joining the Merseysiders on Deadline Day it certainly would’ve been premature to expect Klopp and the powerbrokers at Anfield to give up on him already.
Arthur was signed on loan after Jordan Henderson sustained an injury against Newcastle United just over 24 hours before the transfer window closed, with the skipper’s sidelining clearly the final blow that the club could take in terms of their injury crisis in the middle of the park.
Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita were already recovering from various injury issues before Henderson joined them, and within a day Arthur joined the squad at Anfield to bolster the midfield after a disastrous start to the season for the Reds.
The Juventus star has a lot to offer to Liverpool’s midfield, ranking in the top 10% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for pass completion and passes attempted over the last 12 months. He also features in the top 17% for progressive carries, proving that he has quality attributes in distributing the ball accurately.
Before joining Liverpool, Arthur hadn’t played since 11 May, the night of the Coppa Italia final, and he was injured throughout the summer, so getting him up to scratch and at the level required to start playing in a high intensity team was never going to happen overnight.
With that being said, it’s good news that Klopp and FSG have no intentions of cutting short Arthur’s loan, as the midfielder could prove to be extremely helpful in Liverpool’s pursuit to improve and compete for trophies yet again this season.
