Liverpool: Fabrizio Romano drops transfer update

Liverpool have made three new signings this summer so far, and now a reliable source has given an update on the club’s transfer plans in the final weeks of the window.

What’s the latest?

Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Liverpool’s stance in the transfer window going forward.

Romano revealed in his Caught Offside daily briefing (via Empire of the Kop):

“Liverpool fans will no doubt be keen on updates, but the Reds are well known for being very quiet in the way they do their business.

“New signings don’t currently look like an urgent priority. For one thing, inside the club there is enormous satisfaction for having extended Mo Salah’s contract: it’s considered like a new signing.

“New sporting director Julian Ward did a great job on this deal, which is probably the most important thing the club could have done all summer.”

Supporters will be frustrated

Following the 4-0 defeat during a pre-season friendly with Manchester United yesterday, it will surely frustrate supporters that it is not looking like an urgent priority for Liverpool to make any more signings this summer to strengthen the squad.

Should LFC make more signings this summer?

No

No

There is no doubt that the Reds are in the market for a dynamic midfielder with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all set to be out of contract in June 2023, as well as Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara now in the latter stages of their career.

Liverpool did pursue Aurelien Tchouameni earlier this summer with the player even reportedly agreeing terms with the Merseyside club but eventually, he made the decision to make a move to Real Madrid.

Despite the failure to sign Tchouameni, Liverpool have been linked with a number of midfielders this summer including Adrien Rabiot, Nicolo Barella and Ibrahim Sangare, as well as one of the hottest young midfield prospects in the world, Jude Bellingham.

Bellingham has constantly been speculated as Jurgen Klopp’s top priority, however, the manager did speak out earlier this week about the player during a pre-season press conference in Bangkok:

First up, who was Liverpool's top goal scorer this season?

“He’s not on the market, so that’s the first problem with that player. Well, the only problem with that player!”

The German coach also added his analysis on the midfielder situation at Anfield:

“We can go through it. Where do you want to start? So, Fabinho, Henderson, Thiago, Milner, Keita, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Fabio Carvalho, Oxlade-Chamberlain. Now you tell me what kind of player are we missing? One who is offensive, 1.95m and arrives into the box to head balls in? OK, apart from that!”

With that being said, the Anfield faithful will likely trust their multi-trophy winning manager’s perception of his team and won’t argue, however, the midfield will become a much more pressing issue as contracts dwindle down to the last few months next summer, something FSG will need to prepare for.

AND in other news: FSG can land Klopp his very own Neymar with Liverpool bid for £34m “joy to watch”
