Liverpool were linked with the potential re-signing of Georginio Wijnaldum on a season-long loan this summer, and now a reliable source has given an update on the speculated move.

Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has delivered an update on the rumours that Liverpool may look to loan former midfielder Wijnaldum this summer.

However, it's not ideal news for supporters who wanted him back. Romano tweeted:
"Liverpool are not in talks to sign Gini Wijnaldum from Paris Saint-Germain as of today. Rumours are described as ‘fake’ by sources."
Supporters will be worried
Liverpool supporters might not be concerned by the news that Wijnaldum won't be returning this summer, but they will surely be worried that there is no new progress in signing a new midfielder ahead of next season.
It is clear that the club are interested in adding a new face to the centre of their squad as they were reportedly in close pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni before he signed with Real Madrid earlier this month, and the signing of a new midfielder seems to be an option not yet confirmed.
James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are all in their 30s which would suggest they are in their final years with the club so it would make sense for the powers at Anfield to be looking for their next generation of midfielders to succeed the talented crop of players in the middle of the pitch.
The Reds have been linked with numerous midfielders already following Tchouameni's move to Los Blancos, with Jude Bellingham and Nicolo Barella both speculated to make a move to Merseyside, however, no official bids have been made at this point.
Although it was a very unlikely turn of events for Wijnaldum to return to Anfield this summer, it would have been a sensible choice from FSG in terms of bolstering their midfield in the short term.
The PSG star is very familiar, prolific and experienced in playing to the style Jurgen Klopp deploys in his team after playing under the manager for five years, and would've easily been able to slot in to make an instant impact on the side next term.
With that being said, it is clearly not meant to be for the Dutchman to reignite his career back in the Premier League via the Merseyside giants but it will be interesting to see if Liverpool do make that desired midfield signing this summer.
