The Merseyside club tweeted:

"Outstanding news.

"The boss couldn't be happier that @J_Gomez97 has extended his seven-year spell at the club."

Supporters will be delighted

There is no doubt that supporters will be delighted that Gomez is now set to stay at Liverpool after mounting speculation that the player may leave this summer.

The Liverpool centre-back has reportedly had interest from Aston Villa and Newcastle United since the transfer window opened, however it is clear that the Merseysiders are not willing to let their player go, especially when you consider his impact since he joined the club in 2015.

Gomez was signed just four months before Jurgen Klopp was appointed and is one of the very few players that remain in the squad that wasn't signed by the German coach.

Since the defender was signed he has won a Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Liverpool's first ever Premier League title, but has fallen out of favour due to numerous injuries that has stopped the player from having a more consistent role in the team.

The 25-year-old suffered a number of ankle injuries and more recently suffered patella problems in late 2020, which saw the player sidelined for at least 231 days forcing Klopp to make the signing of Ibrahima Konate who has formed a great partnership with Virgil van Dijk since his arrival.

The Liverpool manager has spoken out amid the confirmation of a contract extension for Gomez, hailing the defender "outstanding" when speaking to the club's official website:

“Joe is an outstanding talent. He is also an outstanding defender and an outstanding human being. He has so many qualities, I could talk about them all day, so knowing that he will continue his journey with us is a massive boost."

With that being said, it will be interesting to see where Gomez fits into the German coach's plans over next season and Liverpool supporters will surely be hoping the player can get back to his best alongside Van Dijk in the back four.
