Liverpool have been linked with a move for Lille striker Jonathan David as manager Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his faltering forward line.

What's the story?

According to TSN Canada journalist Matthew Sciantitti, the Reds are interested in signing the highly-rated 21-year-old this summer, with the French champions potentially open to his sale.

He tweeted: "English sources tell @TSN_Sports, if Lille look to sell Canadian striker Jonathan David to raise funds because of the club’s financial challenges, Liverpool has David very high on the team’s list of potential strikers. Liverpool has long kept tabs on the Canadian’s development."

Fans will be delighted

David only moved to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy 12 months ago, and after a slow start to life in France, he quickly established himself as one of the division's most promising, young attacking talents.

He failed to either score or assist in his first 10 league outings for Lille but broke his duck against Lorient in November and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

As per WhoScored, David recorded 1.5 shots per league game last term and 0.9 key passes, placing him in the top five amongst his teammates for both metrics.

His telling contribution to Lille's shock title-winning campaign saw him notch up 13 goals and three assists in 37 league appearances, attracting the attention of some of the continent's biggest clubs.

With both Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino struggling for form last season, Klopp is thought to be in the market for a new forward this summer, and David could be the ideal candidate.

He's quick, skilful and a deadly finisher, all assets that would come in extremely handy should he make the switch to Merseyside. And the youngster could also be available for a bargain price in the current window.

Lille have already offloaded Boubakary Soumare and Mike Maignan to Leicester City and AC Milan, respectively, in cut-price deals due to the financial impact of the pandemic and the subsequent collapse of the French football television deal.

The Canada international would provide fresh impetus in the final third of the pitch for the 19-time English champions, and Klopp and the supporters would surely love to see him at Anfield next season.

Therefore, the Liverpool fans will surely be delighted that the club's hierarchy are reportedly monitoring David's situation so closely.
