Liverpool: Klopp could land his own Mahrez with Antony swoop

Liverpool are on their pre-season tour of Asia at the moment and have already added three new players to their talented squad this summer, but could be there still be room for improvement for the six-time European Cup winners.

Last season, the Merseysiders went on an impressive run which saw them play every single game possible across four competitions; but despite winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, they fell one point short in the Premier League and lost out in the Champions League final to Real Madrid.

Following their bittersweet campaign, there was a huge blow to the squad as Liverpool legend Sadio Mane made a dash for the exit doors at Anfield, joining Bayern Munich in the early stages of the summer transfer window.

Nevertheless, the Reds got straight to business by making a statement when they signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica in a club-record transfer, also adding teenage duo Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho to the ranks to further strengthen the squad, but there have been no further signings since.

However, there have now been reports of a shock prospective move, with Yahoo Sports claiming that Liverpool are in talks to sign Manchester United transfer target and Ajax star Antony this summer.

The Brazilian winger, who was dubbed a “winner” by Dutch football scout Piet de Visser, has been on the radar of the Kopite’s fierce rivals, but FSG could now be set to hijack any deal that Erik ten Hag might have had in mind with their very own move for the forward.

Last season, Antony scored eight goals, delivered four assists and created seven big chances in the Eredivisie, making 1.7 key passes and one tackle per game. He also won the majority of his duels (51%) and was successful with the majority of his dribble attempts (56%), proving himself to be a valuable asset for Ajax.

Klopp could even land his very own Riyad Mahrez at Anfield if the Reds can secure a deal for the £60m Manchester City star, who was the second most comparable player to Antony over the last 12 months according to FBRef.

Should Liverpool sign Antony?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Although the Brazil international didn’t offer as many goal contributions as Mahrez last term (16), he outperformed his positional peer in his shots on target accuracy (34.2%), won more tackles (12) and had more shots per 90 minutes (4.12).

Although Mohamed Salah has the right winger role nailed down at Anfield, it certainly would do no harm to Liverpool to bolster and strengthen their forward line even further ahead of next season and their pursuit of more trophies.
